New 2017 Subaru Outback Available Now at Northern California's Fairfield Subaru

The Subaru Outback is the model most closely associated with the automaker's brand and ethos. The original Outback was the granddaddy of so-called crossovers more than 20 years ago, and even though this vehicle is definitely more wagon than SUV, it continues to be a top choice for crossover buyers looking for a roomy, family-friendly, all-wheel drive vehicle with serious clearance, to safely get you wherever you need to go, on any roads and in any weather. For northern California drivers who enjoy weekend adventuring and packing up the kids for runs to Tahoe for skiing and Yosemite for hiking, the Outback delivers.

Power and Performance

The 2017 Subaru Outback, like all Subarus, uses Subaru's signature boxer engine, which is flatter than a traditional engine design and uses a horizontally-opposed piston arrangement. The result is a lower center of gravity in the front-end of the vehicle, which provides better traction and handling, particularly when cornering.

The base engine in the Outback is 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder that makes 170 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. It's EPA-rated at an impressive 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. If you need more juice for steep mountain roads, onramp acceleration and highway driving, you may want to opt for the bigger 3.6-liter flat-six that's good for 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is still very good for an all-wheel drive crossover: 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. The Outback can tow 2,700 pounds with the four-cylinder and 3,000 pounds with the six-cylinder - better than either the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4.

Features and Options

The Outback's most important feature - and a top reason car buyers choose Subarus over other brands - is that it comes standard with symmetrical all-wheel drive. Subaru's all-wheel drive system is built into the drivetrain, and delivers power to all four wheels all the time, for maximum traction regardless of road conditions, including snow, ice, mud and loose gravel. Also standard on the Outback is X-Mode, which enables low-speed traction and Hill Descent Control, as well as Active Torque Vectoring, which provides high-speed stability when cornering.

Also worth highlighting is the Outback's spaciousness: it boasts 35.5 cubic feet of room behind the rear seats and an impressive 73.3 cubic feet of cargo capacity with the rear seats folded. That's on par with or better than most other midsize crossovers.

The Outback is available is six trim levels: 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited and 2.5i Touring with the 2.5-liter engine, and 3.6 R Limited or 3.6R Touring if you choose the 3.6-liter engine.

Additional Features and Options

The base Outback 2.5i includes standard features like 17-inch wheels, hill descent control, automatic headlights, a rearview camera, a 60/40 split-back rear seat, roof rails with integrated, fold-out cross bars, Bluetooth, and Subaru's STARLINK infotainment system, with a 6.2-inch touchscreen.

At the top end, the Outback 2.5i Touring and Outback 3.6R Touring are loaded with premium features, including 18-inch wheels, keyless ignition, leather upholstery, a power moonroof and a power rear liftgate with memory height, and a 12-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system.

Everyone will want to seriously consider adding Subaru's available EyeSight® driver assist system. EyeSight uses two small cameras mounted on either side of the rearview mirror to assist with adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning and intervention, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking. New EyeSight features for 2017 are reverse automatic braking and automatic high beams.
