The All New Subaru BRZ

The Subaru BRZ stands apart from the rest of the Subaru lineup, but in a fun and sporty way

When you think about the Subaru brand you probably imagine the outdoor lifestyle, standard all-wheel drive, and a pet dog! However, Subaru has a history that is rooted in performance, and we see that with the boxy Subaru WRX and the ultra-sleek Subaru BRZ. Today we'll dive into the sporty BRZ and review its performance, amenities, safety features, and quickly compare it to a few competitors you might have also considered.

Performance

What sets the BRZ apart from the rest of the Subaru lineup — aside from its exterior that is more comfortable outside of a fine restaurant in Napa than a hiking trail in Walnut Creek — is that it's the only model that does not have standard symmetrical all-wheel drive. Instead and in true performance form, the BRZ is a rear-wheel drive machine.

All trims (the Premium, Limited, and BRZ ts) come with a 2.0L engine with 205 horsepower and 156 lb-ft torque. A six-speed manual is standard, though the Limited can get an automatic transmission. Horsepower and torque dip 5 horsepower and 5 lb-ft with the automatic, so it's a bit of a sacrifice but not much.

A standard sport-tuned suspension, low center of gravity, and a limited-slip differential give this model a vastly different drive-feel than what you'd find on say the Subaru Legacy or Impreza. It's a very responsive vehicle, and automotive journalists have noted how great the steering is. Whether you're driving in busy Sacramento or in the hills of Vacaville, you're going to like being behind the wheel.

If you choose the BRZ tS trim, you'll get a performance package that includes Brembo® brakes and shock absorbers by SACHS®. This package is available on the Limited trim, too. The top trim also has a look fit for underground racing, thanks to prominent carbon fiber trunk wing and front, rear, and rocker spoilers.

Infotainment & Amenities

Don't be concerned that the BRZ is a vehicle that focuses entirely on performance and skimps on the interior goodies. That couldn't be further from the truth! The base model gets a touchscreen that's a hair over six inches. The remaining trims get a seven-inch touchscreen that also can connect to Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™.

A leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shifter are standard, and on the higher trims you can find Alcantara® and leather-trimmed upholstery covering the bolstered sports seats.

Thankfully, designers didn't lose sight of the BRZ's raison d'être: performance. That means that even though you can find premium materials and a high-end interior, you're still going to feel like you're in the cabin of a sport vehicle and not an ultra-plush luxury sedan. And that's a good thing!

Safety

Unlike the other vehicles in the new Subaru lineup, the BRZ cannot get advanced safety technologies that are part of the EyeSight® package. This lack of features is actually quite common on performance vehicles and even off-roaders.

What you will get is Bluetooth which allows for hands-free calling, and while it might seem like an insignificant and "basic" feature, there are still plenty of people who hold the phone up to their ear to take calls and that can cause an accident.

LED lights are also standard on the BRZ! Since you'll be driving around winding roads and (safely) pushing the limits of this low-riding model, it makes sense that you get brighter lights for better visibility. LEDS are especially useful if you're driving down the pedestrian-packed streets of Davis at night.

Us Versus Them

  • Compared to the Ford Focus ST, the Subaru BRZ has a more grown-up look
  • The Nissan 370Z has a more powerful engine lineup, but the starting costs are notably higher
  • The BRZ has more trunk space than the Mazda MX-5 Miata and a stronger engine

We're sure this page has piqued your curiosity about the Subaru BRZ. If you're looking to buy your first Subaru or you already have a model at home but are looking for some sportier weekend fun, come down to our Fairfield CA dealership this week to head out on a test drive!
