What the Subaru Ascent Offers

Still new in the game, the Subaru Ascent has established itself-quickly-as the three-row midsize crossover to get in the Fairfield area. It has a lot going for it: standard all-wheel drive, large interior, and several standard tech and safety features. The Ascent is available in base-model, Premium, Limited, Touring trims.

With three rows of seats and up to 153.5 cubic feet of passenger volume, the Subaru Ascent is one of the most spacious midsize crossovers around. Although the three rows seat up to eight people, you can switch the standard bench-style second row with a pair of captain's chairs to reduce maximum occupancy to seven.

On the Premium, the front seats gain 8-way power and heating ability, the cloth seat trim is stain-resistant, and a leather-wrapping steering wheel faces the driver. The Limited welcomes leather seat trim, steering wheel and second-row heating, and 10-way power-adjustability and a memory system on the driver's seat. Only the Touring gets front-seat ventilation.

Climate controls are available at all three rows of seats for occupants to individualize their heating and cooling preferences. In the driver's hands is a Starlink infotainment system that brings together a six-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, smartphone integration via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a USB port for playing media from portable devices, a four-month trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio, and a 6.5-inch LCD touchscreen.

For a major boost in infotainment, go with the Premium, which welcomes HD Radio, a second USB port for charging mobile devices, hands-free text messaging, voice-activated controls, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The Limited gets dual charging-only USB ports in the second row, an upgrade of the vehicle access and starting system with proximity keyless entry and push-button engine start, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a garage-door opener. Exclusive to the Touring are third-row dual USB ports, a navigation system, and a 14-speaker 792-watt stereo system.

Safety technology on the Subaru Ascent includes EyeSight, a driver-assistance suite that combines adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure, and sway warning, and lane-keep assistance. However, if a crash ever occurs, there are six airbags to provide restraint and cushioning.

Several other features are on board to make the Ascent top-notch in safety. A rear-seat reminder ensures that no one is left behind. Electronic vehicle stability control, traction control, and trailer stability control keep you in your lane while driving around Vacaville. Hill descent control enables a controlled drive downward. A rearview camera produces a video image to monitor what's behind you when driving in reverse. Daytime running lights make the vehicle more visible to other Davis drivers. Active torque vectoring, brake override, anti-lock braking, and brake assist are responsible for making the Ascent a top performer in handling and stopping ability.

The Premium gets several safety upgrades-with blind-spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert for additional driver assistance, and the Subaru Safety and Security suite of functions and services. More driver assistance awaits you at the Limited trim level with reverse automotive braking and high beam assist, and only the Touring gets a front-view camera to replace the rearview camera for a 180-degree viewing perspective.

With an all-wheel-drive system to keep your tires planted on the driving surface, the Ascent is powered by a turbocharged 260-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine for remarkable acceleration power. The flat-four is accompanied by a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which swaps the traditional gear-shifting mechanism with a more energy-efficient and smoother gearless operation. Subaru adds paddle shifters on the steering wheel to make the CVT's operation more convenient.
